What Reiki Really Is (And Why You Might Be Feeling Called To Learn It)

There’s a quiet moment that happens in almost every session I give. A client’s breath slows, their shoulders soften, their face smooths out, and they whisper some version of, “What is this? I feel so calm, but I don’t know why.”

That “I don’t know why” is part of what makes Reiki so special.

Reiki is often described as a “hands‑on healing modality,” but that barely scratches the surface. At its heart, Reiki is a simple, non‑invasive way of working with the body’s energy field to support deep relaxation, nervous system regulation, and the body’s own ability to repair and rebalance itself. It isn’t about forcing anything to happen. It’s more like opening a window and letting fresh air move through a room that’s been closed up for too long.

How Reiki supports your nervous system

Most of us live with our foot on the gas pedal: always “on,” always anticipating, always bracing for the next thing. Over time, that chronic fight‑or‑flight state can show up as anxiety, insomnia, irritability, digestive issues, or a general feeling of being disconnected from our own bodies.

Reiki offers the opposite experience. During a session, you simply lie down, fully clothed, while the practitioner gently places their hands in specific positions on or just above the body. Many people feel warmth, tingling, waves of softness, or nothing at all—just a sense of dropping into a deeper, quieter place inside.

Physically, Reiki has been observed to:

  • Encourage the body into a parasympathetic, “rest and digest” state

  • Soften muscle tension and jaw clenching

  • Support deeper breathing and more restful sleep

Emotionally and energetically, it can feel like someone pressed a reset button on the static in your field.

What happens when you learn Reiki for yourself

Receiving Reiki is powerful. Learning to offer it—first to yourself, then to others—is something different. It’s like being handed a set of keys to rooms inside you that you didn’t know how to access before.

When you learn Reiki, you don’t just memorize hand positions. You experience an attunement process that “tunes” you to the frequency of this gentle, intelligent energy. From there, you can begin to:

  • Give yourself daily self‑treatments to unwind stress and emotional residue

  • Offer simple, supportive sessions to loved ones, kids, elders, and even pets

  • Bring a calmer, steadier presence into your relationships and work

  • Deepen your intuition and trust in your own inner guidance

For many people, learning Reiki becomes a turning point in their relationship with their own body and nervous system. Instead of feeling at the mercy of stress, they have a concrete practice they can return to again and again.

Reiki, ritual, and “Skin Care as Soul Care”

In my own work, I love weaving Reiki with small, sensory rituals: rose hydrosol misted over the face, warm oil pressed into the neck and chest, a few intentional breaths or a short sound healing track. Touching the skin with care while offering Reiki to the body underneath creates a layered experience:

The skin softens. The nervous system unwinds. The mind finally gets a moment off duty.

This is where “skin care as soul care” comes alive for me. It’s not just about serums and moisturizers. It’s about using simple, loving rituals to remind your whole system: You are safe. You are held. You can rest now.

How to know if you might be ready to learn Reiki

You might be feeling a quiet nudge toward Reiki if:

  • You’re the “sensitive one” in the room who feels everything, and you want a way to work with that sensitivity instead of against it.

  • You’re a caregiver, parent, therapist, bodyworker, or space‑holder who needs a gentle tool to support others and refill your own cup.

  • You’re on a healing journey from burnout, anxiety, or chronic stress and want something that addresses your energy and nervous system, not just your to‑do list.

  • You’ve had Reiki sessions and thought, “I want to learn how to do this—for myself and the people I love.”

If any of that resonates, you don’t have to wait until “someday.” Reiki I is designed for beginners. You don’t need to be “spiritual enough,” psychic, or perfect. You just need a curious heart and a willingness to be present with yourself and others in a new way.

A gentle invitation

If you’re feeling that little flutter of curiosity, I’d love to support you.

My next Reiki I & II training in the Twin Cities is a small‑group experience focused on:

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Practical, everyday self‑treatment

  • Hands‑on techniques you can use with loved ones

  • Gentle ritual elements (breath, sound, rose‑based care) to help integrate what you learn

  • An introduction to chakra, crystal and vagus nerve techniques
